Dinosaur + Blue Gem Poems

Get NZ Writing - poetry Over the past few weeks we have been part of the "Get NZ Writing" poetry project. This project aimed to get 96,000 poems written across NZ! We were sent a tin with objects in it and we used one of these objects to write poems. Here are my poems.

Hannah's Wharenui Task.

we have been learning about wharenui because we will be going to one.

                    Wharenui

A Wharenui is a meeting house that represents an important ancestor or a Maori
chief that has passed away and the tribe that owns the wharenui wants to
remember them. A wharenui is like a book because there are special carvings
that represent a legend or something that is special to the tribe that owns the
wharenui. In a wharenui there are also pictures of other special ancestors that
have passed away. They have these photos because the people that own the
wharenui want to remember their special ancestors.  The parts of the outside of
the wharenui are the head / koruru, the arms / Maihi, the hands / raparapa, the
spine / tahuhu, ribs / heke and heart pole, poutokomanawa. There are only
wharenui in some places across the country so we are really lucky to have one in
Arahura and the one in Arahura is black and green and it has lots of detail like
most Wharenui do.

In some wharenui you can stay overnight in them and they serve you yummy food
and you can learn heaps of things about what the carvings mean and lots more.
A wharenui is special because it holds a tribes story inside it. It holds Maori history
and you can go to a wharenui when there is a big earthquake or a disaster and
your house gets wrecked. You can go and stay at a wharenui and it provides you
food while you find somewhere else to live or stay. These are why wharenui are
important to the community.
